EVENING SHADOWS and SYDNEY THOMPSON
The air was warm and inviting and Sydney rode the little steel gray colt out onto the dirt course. He gave a small buck as they trotted along the outside rail. The sun was rising over the horizon. The colt was feeling highly energized this morning. He tugged at the bit, keeping Sydney's attention.
The young rider could do nothing but smile. The colt had alot of growing up to do but he had potential. She was growing a bond with the colt, but nobody had a bond with him like Holly, whom raised him since he was a sickly foal. He had come a long way since then. He had grown into a fine young colt and was just about ready to step onto the track into a real race.
The other horses on the track kept Shadow's attention. He would let out a good morning whinny. He jumped sideways, trying to get someone's attention. The onlookers at the rail were certainly keeping their eyes on him. He was quite a show.
It was time to get down to business. Sydney was gonna take him seven furlongs. Not his type of distance, but it would let him stretch his muscles. She urged him along to the inside rail and turned him around. "Come on boy. We got this." she said, tightening her grip on the reins.
The colt jumped right into a quick breeze. He didn't have the early speed, but once he would see the stretch, he would run like he's on fire. The stretch was where his true colors showed. He was a powerful closer, even though he wasn't all too experienced, yet. He obeyed Sydney's commands and his lead changes were fluid as they went around the long turn of GHF's course.
There it was...the stretch. There he went...kicked into another gear and flew on down the stretch, passing slower horses who were galloping in the gap. His hooves thundered along and dirt flew out from behind him and he pushed all his might into the finish. He flashed under the wire. A great first run. Sydney patted him on the neck. He was ready.
